Iris & Eric | Verandas | The Belamar Hotel | Manhattan Beach | Los Angeles | Wedding
Iris and Eric had a beautiful wedding at Verandas in Manhattan Beach, CA. It was super windy that day, which brought up the chill factor, but the wedding went off without a hitch. It was so windy that as Iris was walking down the aisle her veil stood straight up into the air. It was acting like one of those weather vanes, so her bridesmaid had to help her keep it down.
Iris and Eric were both so happy that day. Seeing a childhood friend getting married is one of those surreal moments, because I knew Iris from Junior high and that's the Iris that I still have in my mind when I talk to her. How fast we grow up. Seeing her mom for the first time made me realize where she gets her fun personality. The best part for me was when Eric's father gave his toast. I think he had the audience in tears by the end. I love it when a parent can give a good roast in such a loving manner.
Iris getting all made up. She's got such beautiful eyes!
A different take on the shoes.
The girls got ready at The Belamar Hotel in Manhattan Beach. This place has some swanky furnishings.
I think this ring shot would make for a cool poster.
She had such a beautiful dress with great details.
Love this shot of her lounging around. A different take on lighting the flowers.
The stunning setup at Verandas.
Eric was so happy coming down that aisle.
A rare quiet moment during the toasts.
This is what they looked like most of the time during the toasts. Iris could not stop laughing!
They had this whole dance routine for everyone. I love the blank look on Eric's face as Iris is trying to tell him that he needs to pay attention to her.
Love how her mom is so playful with her co-workers.
Eric's father raising the roof with his new daughter-in-law.
Kenneth & Connie | San Francisco | Crissy Fields | Downtown | Pre-Wedding Shoot
I love pre-wedding shoots. And post-wedding shoots. What's up with all these shoots nowadays? I can hardly keep up with all of them. Here's all the various shoots I have seen and heard about.
Pre-engagement, propsal, pre-wedding, engagement, destination engagement, boudoir, bridal, wedding, destination wedding, post-wedding, trash the dress, anniversary. Am I missing one?!
Well Kenneth and Connie had a pre-wedding shoot and then an engagement shoot afterwards. A pre-wedding shoot is when the couple gets all dressed up in their wedding attire before their wedding and we go on a shoot together. How fun is that! I love this, because we get more time to shoot with the couple and the bride in her dress makes for some amazing images.
Here are a couple of images from the shoot. Can't wait for their wedding in June!
Ingrid is getting SO good with editing images now. She blew me away when she showed me this one.
This could become my favorite image this year.
Kenneth whispering sweet nothings.
There was a lot of passion and romance going on between Kenneth and Connie. What you don't see is their friends in the background that kept making barfing noises! Gotta love the entourage.
Love how you can see Connie's freckles in this one. I've got freckles too!
Sarah & Amritz | Seattle | Destination Engagement | EMP | Pike's | First Starbuck's
David Wittig, a fellow wedding photog and friend of mine, once spoke about taking our photography to the next level through destination engagement sessions. Right after his talk I was so stoked about telling my brides about this crazy good idea. Destination weddings are generally too expensive for a lot of couples to plan and most people only see them in those fancy magazines. So I tell them about how a destination engagement session is the perfectly affordable way to get gorgeous shots in a different city.
Sarah and Amritz were born and raised in LA, so coming out to Seattle was definitely a new experience for them. Being Seattle, we were really worried about the weather, because the forecast had been for rain all week long. The day before we shot, it rained. Luckily, the day we went out to shoot the weather was perfect. And then the next day, it rained and snowed a lot. This has happened to me numerous times with weddings and engagements. I like to think God is looking out for us sometimes.
Sarah found out about us through Iris and Eric. She loved their engagement session, so there was a little pressure to knock this one out of the park. Amrtiz and Sarah were up for anything, so that made it a thousand times easier. I love how some of the shots came out. Can't wait for their wedding next month!
We had traveled under this walkway so many times before Ingrid stopped us and forced us to take a picture here. She's a landscape architecture major, so she knows what she's doing.
I made Ingrid chase all these birds into the picture. It was a hilarious sight. I love Sarah's yellow jacket in it!
Inside the public market.
There go the birds again. They loved modeling for us that day.
The first starbucks ever. I think they have tamed down their logo tons now. The couple was soaking it up in front of a growing audience of tourists.
Sarah and Amritz had fun being a little silly.
Amritz is completely smitten. Please don't kill me for announcing that bro.
Running in front of Paul Allen's EMP!
Hanging out in front of Seattle's Space Needle.
We just received a 11x16 metallic print of this shot in the mail today. The print is absolutely beauteous. We're going to be showing it off at all our client meets. You guys are going to be famous!
Inside their parking garage Sarah and Amritz showed off their Taekwondo skills. Amritz is a black belt and Sarah is a yellow belt.
Of course I had to get in my fix of something Avant Garde. Can anyone guess what's happening?
You can probably find some kind of meaning behind this one, but I just wanted to see them lying on the floor.
Teresa + David | Moraga | Saint Mary's College Chapel | Lafayette Park Hotel | Wedding
Teresa is one of those hard working school teachers. I wonder if her kids know how fun and passionate Teresa is. I don't think I've ever seen a bride so excited for her own wedding. She was so in the moment the whole day and was in celebration mode the whole time. It was so refreshing to see that and get to enjoy that part of the day with her.
Teresa came as a referral from a past bride, Annie Mun. Thanks Annie! Most of our weddings are from referrals and I love it, because I usually get to see my past couples at the wedding too.
Dave and Teresa were married at the beautiful Saint Mary's Chapel in Moraga. The church is situated inside St. Mary's College, where Teresa's father attended school so the whole place had a special place in her heart. She asked us to take many detail shots of the place and after we took them we realized how rich and beautiful the grounds are. We shot their briefly before, but never had the chance to do the place justice.
Teresa and Dave, you guys were so fun to work with, the day couldn't have been better. I am so glad that you got the wedding and man of your dreams Teresa. You deserve it a thousand times over!
Teresa lookin' gorgeous!

Gotta love the natural window light and warm overhead lighting. Teresa had such a good time posing with us.

Chasin' the girls around.

Ingrid always gets to ride in the limos and I have to drive. Not fair! I love the expression on their faces.

This church is so beautiful. Words just can't describe.

Details.

The moment right before they had to walk in.

The sun was creating this awesome spotlight in the courtyard. God sure does know how to light a scene.

Dave was so happy when they came out together for the first time.

I think Ingrid was hiding behind a column or something when she captured this.

One of my favorite shots of the day. She has some stunning eyes.

I'm so confused

I got 3 friend requests today on Facebook. This one is from my dad. I have no idea how I should react to this. One part of me wants to laugh at how hilarious it is to see that my dad wants to be my friend on facebook. Another part thinks, WOW, my dad is the coolest asian dad I know. The other part is wondering how my dad even knows about facebook or anything internet related at all. I'm so curious as to see who I'll find on his facebook page. Please don't tell me it'll be full of my dad's friends from my childhood. This is just so weird to me right now.
Anyone else experience something like this?
Some of you may have heard this already, but pretty much all the cool images that you see on this blog are because of my dad. I grew up watching my dad paint his fine art paintings all my life. I didn't know it at the time, but all those hours of watching him paint and thinking that I would never be able to be as good an artist as him has completely shaped my artistic abilities to what they are now. I always wanted to be able to create art like him, but I thought it would be too hard for me to even come close. Even now my art comes no where near his abilities. It's funny to think that as a little boy I was learning about lighting, composition, and colors without me even knowing it.
Thanks dad. You're my hero and friend. I guess I should add you on my facebook now.
Kee & Gloria | San Francisco | Palace of Fine Arts | Cable Cars | Engagement Session
Before Kee met Gloria, he was one of the happiest guys I've ever known. We're good friends from college and I think he's gotten happier now that he's with Gloria. I didn't think that was possible, because he has one of the biggest smiles I know and it's about 2mm wider now than before. He couldn't stop smiling through the whole shoot and it was fun trying to see how long he can go without smiling between shots. It's definitely infectious.
It's only fitting that Kee ended up with Gloria, who also has a great smile. What's up with you happy people! Needless to say, we all had a fun time getting out to SF at 7am on a Sunday morning! We wanted that nice golden light from the sunrise.
Did I mention how Kee couldn't stop smiling and laughing through the whole shoot? Gloria was lovin' it.
The Palace of Fine Arts.
Their sweet love taking root. Yeah, that was a corny line.
Kee showing off his Guitar Hero skills.
3 months.
Cool sunflare.
I can't quite put my finger on why I like this image so much, but I do.
The cable car guy kept yelling at me to stop leaning out the side. I just wanted the shot.
Jennilee & Brett | San Francisco | Westcott | BART | Union Square | North Beach | Engagement Session
When we met Jennilee for the first time in Union Square, I think she was pretty nervous. Well...I would be nervous too if I was about to get my picture taken for two hours straight. After a few shots and Brett making us laugh with his funny antics, we all realized that this would be a fun and very refreshing (for us photographers) session.
We wanted to hit all the cool spots so we just kept on walking and walking. We were even thinking about walking from North Beach to Union Square. Brett and Jennilee were such good sports through it all and I think we managed to get some killer shots in. I loved that they were always up for something creative and had great suggestions throughout the whole day. I can't wait to shoot their wedding in May!
Falling in love. Literally.
We always look for great lighting first. And sometimes the source might not be what you expect. These were taken at the Powell Bart Station from one of those blank advertisement walls. Normally, you'd have to do these in a studio.
Real props to Jennilee and Brett for this one. These frosted door were backlit by a Victoria's Secret store. We asked them to do anything they could think of behind those doors. I don't think anyone knew that there were photographers on the other side so they just looked like two crazy people doing strange things inside of Victoria's Secret. You guys rock!
BART!
Fun shot in the middle of Union Square!
Love those eyes!
The cute couple.
We went behind an alley and found this. I love the lighting in this one.
I was cracking up so hard during this one. Brett was acting like a sleezy guy ambling down to the pretty lady.
